Adam Portraiture Award Exhibition Opens This Week

My work will be hung at The New Zealand Portrait Gallery from this Wednesday.

The show features finalists of this years' Adam Portraiture Award, selected by Guest Judge Mette Skougaard, Director of The Museum of National History, Frederiksborg Castle, Denmark. 

If you are in Wellington, the show will be on display at The NZPG, Shed 11 from the 25 February to 29 May 2016. There will also be a People's Choice Award which you can vote for during your visit.

Coming Along On A New Portrait...

I have continued my exploration of portraiture as part of my body of work. It is a way to reach the core individual, of people I have met from around the world and after all, my experience of any place is so dependent on the people. I think my love of this kind of work resulted from my residence in France, where I focused on a series creating 'A Sense of Place', and did this through fleeting portraits of people I met as I travelled. Part documentation, part exploration into the human psyche. Although I do some work from a distance, I always appreciate interaction with the sitter of some sort, interested in hearing about their experience and transferring that through my own vision.

Finished this piece in November. I have painted my father as a thank you for the support and inspiration he has given me to pursue my passion, a career in art, and also out of the great respect I have for his own work. His research has contributed to and created headway in addressing climate change, a pressing issue of our time. On the left, I have depicted the two graphs he uses to introduce his research to politicians and policy makers around the globe, showing the outcomes of action vs. non-action.

My latest conception of the mysterious heroine of my mythos, The Stories of Niljora ©. Very excited to have recently published some excerpts from my story, with accompanying art, that has driven so much of the content of my work. While the story is much a world written out, and currently an index to my art, I look forward to bringing it out further in a number of forms. Progress On A New Portrait

I have started a new oil portrait. Here I am showing the underpainting, followed by the grisaille layers, and lastly the first layers of colour, keeping with a limited, earthy palette focused on the warm vs. the cool.

My New Hardcover Book Now Available

Presenting my new hardcover publication, released this September. The books features a selection of my works created between 2013-2015, included in my Worlds survey show in Wellington. There are 18 full page images set alongside excerpts from my mythos, The Stories of Niljora.

Exhibition opening of WORLDS by Carolin Prinn & Lance Ravenswood

I will be exhibiting new paintings and a survey of my work alongside graphic designer & visual artist Lance Ravenswood in Wellington next week. The show surveys and investigates the fantastical and symbolic narratives of our visual worlds. Limited edition prints and copies of our art books will also be available.

These works are an exploration of philosophical theory and their relevance and perhaps importance in today's modern world. There is a humanistic element to them and a deep interest in the various constructs of society and human behavior. Imbued with symbolic notations, allegorical characters and cascading movement, I hope to inspire analysis on these subjects while also instilling a sense of beauty and fantasy.

The Works of Winter in an Enchanted Studio

It has been a busy few months with so many projects being wrapped up and new ones being created, I thought I might share a few notes. On the right, my first large-scale pen and ink ready to head off to the framers. On the desk, eight small pen and ink works almost ready to frame for a 2 person show (at Deluxe, 14 - 28 September). On the left, the underdrawing is complete for my oil painting and ready for the first layer. This work is part of a series that has been brewing in my mind for a long time. 

I am essentially working on three series in three different mediums at once. My pen & ink works I see as living in a Platonic World of Ideas. Meanwhile, the oil works are more like philosophy at play in reality, which creates this new sense of relationship with and particular sensitivity to my subjects, who are all modelled from real life poses and props. 

These series both continue my usual themes including the strength of the 'story', the 'repetition of history', the philosophical ideal, with both playful and satirical notes. 

I look forward to returning to my acrylic works later this year which I see as the meeting place between these two.

New Pen and Ink Work

Capturing a story from my epic in development, The Stories of Niljora©. A glimpse into my world. Relating the characters into these flattened planes of pen & inks makes their primordial nature even stronger, a kind of lyrical and hieroglyphic storytelling.

So I painted this one up in time to enter into Wellington's premiere portraiture gallery. Lance has been fortunate to have two portraits done this year. I could hardly believe when I got the letter of acceptance. I'm a chosen finalist for the 2014 ADAM Portraiture Award and will be included on an 18 month national tour through The New Zealand Portrait Gallery which will begin with The PAH Homestead, TSB Bank Wallace Arts Centre. The opening was fantastic with such a lovely variation of works!

Been a bit of time since my last post but here is a charcoal portrait I finished recently. Drawing from life informs my imaginative works so much. I am currently working on a large scale pen & ink before heading into my watercolour paintings I am missing. I am also planning out a new oil portrait and planning and designing for my new apparel line Prinn Walker & Ravenswood.
