Painting a Magical World

I have been inspired to do some digital painting as of late. Here I illustrated a scene from my story world, The Islands of Niljora. I have an exciting project in the works for this world of mine. Stay tuned.

Editorial Portraits for REGJO

My first editorial in Germany, published in the October edition of REGJO, Germany's regional journal. The work was designed for an article relaying the design principles for TRIZ, a mode of discovering methods of invention. Here, several of its prime movers and related philosophers (c.w. Altschuler, Marx, Leibniz, and Hegel ) are represented along with the inventions that have inspired the rediscovered system of engineering that is spurring ingenuity in the 21st century.

I have had the happy opportunity to create a pair of portraits specially for inclusion in '50 Years At The Village Vanguard', a new book by Dave Lisik and Eric Allen. I have truly enjoyed being a part of this project, celebrating the lives of these two jazz legends and look forward to seeing it in its final press. The book is currently on Presale through the site www.thadmelvjobook.com and is set for release early next year. 

To coincide with the books release, I am also offering an open print edition of the two portraits, available for a limited time through my shop.

The Painting Process

Here I show the process behind my paintings. The underpainting, which I studied through the masters Jan Van Eyck and Leonardo, allows an almost surreal sense of depth to come through the transparent layers of oil, allowing an incredible amount of detail. Stylistically, I have also developed techniques inspired from The Symbolists, Renaissance masters and Romantics. This work is concerned with the inconceivable 'Socratic (or Platonic) Ideal', a common motif in my work, then uses literary reference and the Fairytale, The Sleeping Beauty, to illustrate a modern condition.

I have been steadily at work on portrait commissions of late. This is one I finished recently. To capture the rather delicate and beautiful features, I used solely layers of HB graphite, which creates an effect reminiscent of silverpoint. I particularly like the result. Before handing it over, I had a chance to show this and others from my collection with PRO4 in Friedrichshain, Berlin.

Adam Portraiture Award Exhibition Opens This Week

My work will be hung at The New Zealand Portrait Gallery from this Wednesday.

The show features finalists of this years' Adam Portraiture Award, selected by Guest Judge Mette Skougaard, Director of The Museum of National History, Frederiksborg Castle, Denmark. 

If you are in Wellington, the show will be on display at The NZPG, Shed 11 from the 25 February to 29 May 2016. There will also be a People's Choice Award which you can vote for during your visit.

Finalist For The 2016 Adam Portraiture Awards

Very honoured to receive news that my painting is a selected finalist for the 2016 Adam Portraiture Award. The exhibition opens and final judging for the award will be announced 24th February. I am very excited to be showing with the NZ Portrait Gallery again.

Coming Along On A New Portrait...

I have continued my exploration of portraiture as part of my body of work. It is a way to reach the core individual, of people I have met from around the world and after all, my experience of any place is so dependent on the people. I think my love of this kind of work resulted from my residence in France, where I focused on a series creating 'A Sense of Place', and did this through fleeting portraits of people I met as I travelled. Part documentation, part exploration into the human psyche. Although I do some work from a distance, I always appreciate interaction with the sitter of some sort, interested in hearing about their experience and transferring that through my own vision.
